Bits of Facts on College Park, MD

College Park is one of the cities in Prince George’s County in the state of Maryland. It owes portions of its rich history to the men and women of several fraternities and sororities of the University of Maryland who after being successful in their chosen fields and careers managed to establish their dwellings in the one under-developed parcel of land.

Back in 1872 when the area was first plotted by Eugene Campbell, the area remained undeveloped until its re-platting in 1889 by John Johnson and Samuel Curriden who were at that time were distinguished real estate developers. From then on, it underwent rapid development especially to the growing faculty and student population of the also growing university population. The area also served as a sweet escape to groups of people who were seeing Washington DC as an already crowded area.

The early beginnings of the city saw single-family residences which were mostly in styles of Shingle, Queen Anne, and Stick. By 1920s, the area saw an increased commercial development. BY 1945, it was incorporated until a municipal center was established in 1959.

As the city undergoes continuous development, several neighborhoods were established giving rise to what are known today as Lakeland, Berwyn, Daniels Park, and Hollywood. Other neighborhhods in the city to this day are Autoville, Branchville, Calvert Hills, College Park Woods, Crystal Springs, North College Park, Old Town, Sunnyside, and Yarrow. By 2016, it was estimated that population was at 32 275. This was at 6.1% increase from the 2010 census.

As a vibrant and prosperous city, College Park continues to undergo developments to further serve its residents and to attract visitors to what they dub as smart move of shifting residence to the city. Being the home of the prestigious University of Maryland, it envisions being a center of educational excellence to serve almost half of its current population who are students who would someday follow the footsteps of UMD founders Wright Brothers.

College Park, being minutes away from the capital is also a city which offers plenty of opportunities for businesses. A lot of income-generating activities can be the backbone of business that can serve the demanding student population. Other businesses can also be anchored on the several historical and cultural attractions that also have the city as their home.

For years to come, the city is expected to undergo more developments as several stations of the planned Purple Line of the light rail system is expected to serve the city by 2020. By this time, more business are expected to grace the perimeters of the city.
